How to handle pain from a new denture

November 19, 2018

You did it! You have your new smile! Congratulations! Now you’ll need to know what you can expect from your new denture and some tips that’ll help you along the way.

The “Break-in” Period

With any denture, the one thing that nearly everyone will experience is some discomfort within the first few days. The reason for this is because your gum tissue is soft, and your denture is hard.  So, when they rub together it can cause friction and sore places within your mouth. Though our Melton Dental Group dentures are custom made to the mould of your mouth, there could still be certain places early on where it rubs too hard.

When you experience this, all you need to do is come visit us in our Melton office.  Try to wear the denture as much as possible. If we can see a sore place on your gums, we’ll be able to use special tools to tell us exactly what part of the denture is bothering that area. If we can pinpoint it accurately then we adjust it ever so slightly, so we don’t compromise the fit of it.

It’s perfectly normal to have to get a few adjustments during this “breaking in’ period.  So please don’t get discouraged along the way or feel like you’re bothering us.  We’re here to help and want you to be able to enjoy your new denture.
