Can You Go to the Dentist When Pregnant? What to Know

Pregnancy changes a lot – your body, your routines and your priorities. However, one thing that shouldn’t be pushed to the side is your dental health. In fact, seeing the dentist during pregnancy isn’t just safe, it’s important for both you and your baby.

Let’s break down what to know, what’s safe, and what to expect when visiting your dentist while pregnant.

Why Dental Visits Matter During Pregnancy

Pregnancy hormones can affect more than just your mood and appetite – they also impact your teeth and gums. You’re more prone to inflammation, gum disease, and even enamel erosion due to morning sickness. It’s called “pregnancy gingivitis” and it can start as early as the first trimester.

Also, it’s not just about your mouth. Gum disease has been linked to complications like preterm birth and low birth weight. So keeping your oral health in check is part of keeping your pregnancy healthy too.

When to Let Your Dentist Know You’re Pregnant

It’s a good idea to let your dentist know of your pregnancy if you’ve got a check-up coming up or if you’re dealing with any dental issues. Knowing you’re expecting helps your dentist tailor your care, keeping both you and your baby safe and comfortable. If something’s not urgent, they might suggest holding off until a later stage, depending on how far along you are.

Generally, the second trimester is the most comfortable window for routine dental work. By then, the early nausea has usually eased up and you’re not yet dealing with the discomfort that often comes later. The first trimester is still fine for cleans and check-ups, but we tend to avoid anything non-essential during those early weeks. By the third trimester, lying back in the chair for longer periods can be a bit of a struggle, so we’ll keep appointments short and sweet where possible.

What’s Safe at the Dentist During Pregnancy?

A lot more than people think. Here’s what’s generally considered safe:

  • Check-ups and cleans are perfectly fine at any stage.
  • Modern dental X-rays use very low radiation and are safe with a lead apron, but most dentists avoid them unless absolutely necessary.
  • For local anaesthetics, numbing agents like lidocaine are safe in small doses and won’t harm the baby.
  • Fillings and extractions can be done if needed
  • Some antibiotics like amoxicillin are safe during pregnancy, but always let your dentist know if you’re taking anything else or have allergies.

What Procedures Should Wait Until After Birth?

Elective treatments, like teeth whitening or cosmetic work are usually better saved for after your baby arrives. They’re not unsafe but they’re also not essential during pregnancy.

Some complex procedures that involve sedation or longer time in the chair may also be postponed, especially in the later months.

Tips for a Healthier Smile During Pregnancy

  • Brush and floss twice a day to fight plaque and gum inflammation.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush if your gums feel tender or bleed.
  • If you have morning sickness, rinse with water and wait 30 minutes before brushing to protect enamel.
  • Stay hydrated and limit sugary snacks to reduce decay risk.
  • Book a dental check-up if it’s been a while.

Cravings and Snacking

We get it, pregnancy cravings are real. But frequent snacking on sweet or starchy food increases the risk of tooth decay. If you find yourself grazing more often, rinse your mouth with water after eating and brush when you can.
