How to tell if you have a cavity

It’s important to know that you can have a cavity with without any symptoms at all.  This is just one reason why it is very important to come to the dentist at least twice a year for an examination and clean. This is called a preventative care appointment.

Melton Dental Group has been seeing families in Melton for over 25 years. During preventative care appointments, provide regular radiographs to help ensure that we diagnose cavities in the earliest stages and also see cavities are developing between the teeth. When caught early, decay can usually be easier to fix.

However, if it’s been a while since you’ve visited the dentist and you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, then you may have a cavity.  In some instances, you could be dealing with a more severe dental issue.  You should consider scheduling an appointment with Melton Dental Group if you are noticing:

  • Cold sensitivity, which can be decay or sometimes root exposure.
  • Hot sensitivity can be more serious and mean the nerve inside the tooth is starting to abscess.
  • Sensitivity to sweets, which can include drinks such as juice or flavoured coffee.
  • A hole in your tooth can be quite aggravating when it constantly packs food.
  • Discomfort during chewing can mean decay or even a cracked tooth.
  • Dull or throbbing, spontaneous pain can also mean that an abscess is developing.
  • Dark spots on teeth are usually cavities, but can also be stain, so it is important to have our dentist check it.

When you come into Melton Dental Group, we’ll take a radiograph of the tooth in question.  Our dentist will perform a thorough examination and see if treatment is needed. We will take the time to explain what is causing the pain and how to rectify it. We will work with you to ensure that you are provided with the best care possible.

We look forward to meeting you and providing you with exceptional dental care for many years to come! Call us today on 9743 4922 to schedule an appointment.
